How Does DCP Distribution Work?

DCP (Direct Control Protocol) is a standard protocol for controlling network hardware devices. It is used in conjunction with Universal Serial Bus (USB), which provides a standardized interface for devices to communicate using DPCM. Standard features include portability, security, and ease of use. The DCP must be able to communicate with the various DCC devices on a given network, which requires a converter and a device driver. There are three devices used in DCP:

Distribution service has two major purposes: one is to control the DCC (Digital Control Program) devices and their drivers, and the second is to control the distribution of DPCM data. The distribution services are managed by the distribution controller (DCC). The distribution controllers are usually in server computers. The Digital Copy Programmable Multipoint Distribution Service (DCPM) is the software that controls the distribution of DPCM. The software can be either a single-port controller or multi-port controller.

The multi cpld controllers have the following advantages over single-port controllers: they are faster, have more than one controller (which allows controlling different types of DPCMs at the same time), have more than one KSM enabled (allows for multiple-mode DPCM), have more than one KDM (Karaoke device), and have the ability to switch between multiple modes (when necessary). The multi-port controller has the following disadvantages: they are slow (for streaming data) and have a single-port KSM which limits the amount of input/output ports. They also consume more memory. The Encoder/Decoder: A decoder is a software tool that compresses the captured frames into the necessary size and type for playback on a computer or other digital cinema package. In the case of a DCP digital cinema package, it compresses the captured image onto a single frame. There are many different compression methods available. Standard JPEG2000 is the most widely used by distributors.

The encoder is required to decide what compression method to use and how to apply it. This decision is based on factors such as available bandwidth, picture quality, and picture frame rate. The decision can be divided into the transfer method (which is often referred to as "width" in DCP) and the compression method. The transfer method refers to how the audio and video data are transmitted and compressed.

There are two main ways to configure DCP. These are either via the internet (either by using a PC at the provider site or through a web browser) or via hard drive installation. Users need to know the IP address and domain name of the source and destination servers. Digital cinema distribution can be delivered through PCS networks that utilize a Local Area Network (LAN). This means that the consumer is able to view their video over the Internet even if they are not connected to a LAN directly. Digital cinema systems that are run on hard drives require an external PC or laptop that is connected to a network via a data cable.
