Reforms in Mallorca

Many of the traditional customs and folkloric values of Catholicism are disappearing slowly but surely, as modern culture and new philosophies influence the lives of ordinary people in Mallorca. In the case of the Catholic Church, it is obvious that the values of obedience to authority, discipline, forgiveness and loyalty to the Pope have greatly diminished. Many families in Mallorca, who had been practising Catholicism for generations, now are mainly Protestant or Islam, following their own principles and beliefs. The same trend can be observed in other communities all over the island.

Reforms in Mallorca continue to gain strength as younger generations turn to alternative faiths and belief systems. The traditional presubstantiate Church has accepted this and welcomes converts. An example is the Santo Domingo Church, which has an imminently appealing atmosphere despite its location in the tranquil and peaceful mountains of Mallorca. The parish church buildings exude a warm ambience and homely atmosphere, with well-furnished parishes, superior services, and many activities and social events that make for enjoyable and memorable times both for the priests and the parishioners.

The Mallorca Orthodox Church has also adapted slowly to the changing trends, accepting many elements of the reformed while keeping its fundamental beliefs and traditions. The mainstay of its services is the divine message of the Holy Bible and the service of the priests and clergy, who wear the clerical clothes prescribed by the holy tradition. The priests are under the supervision of the Holy Father, who resides and serves as a resident pontiff over the entire island of Mallorca. Although there are no dioceses in Mallorca, there are numerous convents, each providing a place of penitence for the penitent.

Another important element of the reformed culture in Mallorca is the community of villages. These villages are made up of around half a dozen neighborhoods, all of which have different cultural roots. Some of the more prominent ones include the una vida (centre of activities), liars(small settlements), estanques(small towns), calahonda(large towns), and barracas(large cities). In the central region of Mallorca, there is a town called Santsia and this is an important economic and social center, housing the main public works office as well as other important institutions. Other places of note include Cala'n Forcat which is an important fishing village, the village of Cortslandra and it's surrounding hamlets and the village of Escondido, both of which are located in the coastal area of Mallorca.

The Reforms in Mallorca continue to spread in different directions. The most prominent is the establishment of the first municipal council for the entire island of Mallorca. It is known as the BaOs (boroughs) and has been accused of concentrating too much power in itself. Despite this, the boroughs do maintain overall control over many areas of the island, including the construction and running of schools, police stations, shopping centers, water services and utilities and major transportation. The borough also has full authority over the running of the port of Grange, the main airport in the entire archipelago. Click here for more details about Reformas en Mallorca

The most important cultural Reform movement to take place in Mallorca took place some thirty years ago when the town of Santa Cruz was established. It is named after a resident of the town, Francisco Cruz who went on to found the first school in the town. This school is now known as the Santo Domingo elementary school and has two schools in it: a primary school and a secondary school. This was done in an attempt to integrate the Church and education in an attempt to provide all children with equal opportunity.
